CT Police Officer Charged With DUI

NEW HAVEN— A 12-year veteran police officer was placed on paid administrative leave Tuesday and ordered to turn in his badge and gun after Chief Frank Limon learned he had been convicted of driving under the influence.Officer James Evarts pleaded no contest to a charge of driving under the influence Jan. 26 and sentenced to six months in jail, with execution suspended after 10 days, according to online court records. He was ordered to serve 18 months probation and pay a $500 fine.

Evarts was charged with DUI in July 2010 in Old Saybrook. He was being held Tuesday in a Department of Correction residential facility. Limon ordered an internal affairs investigation into the matter.

"It’s disappointing to have to find out from another agency that a member of our department is under the control of the Department of Corrections for an off-duty incident that occurred in another jurisdiction," Limon said in a statement issued Tuesday evening.
