A much debated policy in the Bay Area, gang Injunctions have spread throughout cities and counties in California, and are beginning to make a mark in Long Island, Salt Lake City, El Paso, and Minneapolis. Now, even other countries have adopted the policy. The BBC reports that the government of Britain now provides gang injunction powers to local police and councils: The new legislation is also known as GangBOS, and follows ASBOS, a similar controversial scheme targeting those accused of “anti-social” behavior. Unlike the American versions, Britain’s gang injunctions are national programs, administered by request by local police forces, cities and counties. In other details, they operate like the civil gang injunctions at home. Though there are differences: Britain’s gang injunction not only bars colors and geographic presence, it bars dog ownership as well. Citizens and groups from around Britain question the anti-gang policy. Anita Coles, from the UK’s National Council on Civil Liberties claims that it is, “yet another gimmick for punishing people without a fair trial.
