SPOKANE -- A former prison inmate is adding insight about the man accused of murdering a corrections officer at the state prison in Monroe. Byron Scherf is accused of strangling Jayme Biendl inside a chapel at the Monroe Correctional Complex. A man who spent years alongside Scherf talked to KREM 2 News on Tuesday. He describes Scherf as someone who was ministering to other people, conducting sermons, and counseling inmates. We are only identifying him as Gary because he is an ex-felon trying to start a new life in Spokane. Gary spent 37 years incarcerated for rape and kidnapping. Six of those years were alongside Scherf in Walla Walla Penitentiary. Gary says he saw Scherf everyday. They would exchange greetings and talk about the Bible. At that point, Scherf was serving time in kidnapping for rape and setting a woman on fire. Gary and Scherf went through sex offender treatment programs together. Of all the sex offenders in Walla Walla, Gary felt Scherf could be rehabilitated. The Department of Corrections agreed and Scherf was released in 1993. Read More. |
