YAKIMA — Yakima County commissioners took their first official step Tuesday toward putting the minimum-security jail building known as the restitution center up for sale. It's the first of two jails the county wants to unload. The county plans to accept sealed bids next month on the 27,758-square-foot restitution center across from the Valley Mall in Union Gap. The proposed sale also launches the county's effort to get out of the jail-bed rental business, which has caused any number of headaches. "We are proposing to seek bids to see if we can sell the property for an appropriate amount," Commissioner Rand Elliott said, "and take a first step further back from the larger rental business."
