A Fitchburg State College graduate was sworn in this week as chief of the U.S. Probation Department in Massachusetts.

Most recently, Mr. Maloney was the chief federal probation officer in New Jersey, a job he held since 2004.

Mr. Maloney also spent seven years working with the Administrative Office of the United States Courts in Washington, D.C., first as the regional administrator of the Office of Probation and Pretrial Services, and then as chief of the program services branch of that office. He was responsible for oversight of the federal probation system’s substance abuse, mental health and location monitoring programs.

Mr. Maloney began his career as an inpatient substance abuse counsel for Odyssey Family Treatment Program in Medfield; became a probation officer in the Florida Department of Corrections; and then served as a federal probation officer from 1992 to 1997 in Boston.
