| NV DOC Budget May Be Safe |

Nevada's prison system would escape the kind of deep cuts proposed for public education and social service programs under Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval's proposed budget plan, but lawmakers will again be asked to close an aging prison in Carson City, a legislative subcommittee was told Wednesday. The Department of Corrections, with nearly 13,000 inmates, faces a major drop in federal funding as stimulus money dries up. But legislators were told the shortfall would be backfilled with millions of dollars from the general fund under Sandoval's proposal. Sandoval's prison budget includes $495.2 million in general fund money during the upcoming biennium that begins July 1. That would be a $56.5 million, or nearly 13 percent increase, over current general fund support.
