![]() Pace Learning Systems, Inc. (PLS) is dedicated to breaking the cycle of failure for offenders. PLS was established in 1977 by Dr. John McKee with the mission of breaking the cycle of failure. He would accomplish this by helping inmates become successful in all aspects of life, from obtaining GEDs, to becoming employable, to gaining the necessary life skills to be able to function successfully in today's world. Today, re-integration and re-entry programs are striving to achieve those same goals. With the help of PLS products, the re-integration of offenders into society is an easily obtained reality. PLS provides individualized instruction in a self-paced, failure-free environment. So, for offenders who have not been successful in education or those who have had problems obtaining or maintaining employment, PLS has the solutions. PLS offers instruction in academic skills such as Reading, Language, Mathematics, Science, Writing, and Social Studies. PLS also offers instruction in life skills and employability skills to provide the instruction for all areas needed for successful re-integration. Dr. Susan McKee, President and CEO of Pace Learning Systems, Inc., says "We understand the need to reduce recidivism and to increase the success of offenders as they re-enter the world. We have created systems of instruction that can make this possible for every student. A developmental reading program is available to help non-readers and low-level readers obtain reading fluency. We have created ABE programs in Math, Reading, and Language to give them the basic skills they need to build upon in the future. Our advanced instruction for GED preparation is excellent. And, we offer pre-employment skills, work maturity skills, and an array of life skills covering areas from self-concept and why we work to comparative shopping and completing financial forms. All of this is presented in an easy to use, seamless fashion." She continues "We offer these materials in both print and software to provide different modalities of learning and to meet the various needs of both students and educational programs. At PLS, our mission is to break the cycle of failure, and we believe we can do that by making every student educationally successful." PLS has a history of success. PLS materials are used in over 300 correctional facilities across the United States. State adult and juvenile programs, state county facilities, federal programs, as well as juvenile boot camps and day treatment centers successfully use our materials every day and see resounding results. One example is the C.I.T.Y. (Community Intensive Training for Youth) program of Alabama which has worked with 466 adjudicated delinquent youth in their day treatment program using PLS instructional materials. On average, students achieved one complete grade level for every 45 hours of instruction. C.I.T.Y. has now expanded to ten sites across Alabama. This is the kind of accountability Pace Learning has offered its customers throughout the history of the company.
