Members of the Belknap County Delegation today will take a tour of the Belknap County Department of Corrections facility, along with other county departments, to get a feel for how they operate and what their needs are, before the budgeting process is completed later this month or next. While a new corrections facility is not requested in this year's budget — or even planned for next — Daniel Ward Sr., superintendent of county Department of Corrections, along with County Commissioners, say the need to build one within the next few years is great. An aging facility with numerous safety, security and structural problems, coupled with a growing prison population, has increased the urgency. "We're trying to be proactive," Ward, said. "I know no one wants to spend money; it's a difficult economy, but it's a situation of pay now or pay more later." Read More. |
