| Jail Calling Just Got Cheaper |

— These days, when Bert lands in the Limestone County Jail and starts missing his best girl, Matilda, he doesn’t have to call her collect to chat, and she doesn’t have to pay such a high phone bill. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, cheaper rates and jail revenue, Sheriff Mike Blakely has had two telephone-card kiosks installed at the jail that loved ones can use to buy prepaid telephone cards for their chosen inmates. The prepaid cards make jailhouse-to-loved-one communication less expensive and boosts the Sheriff’s Department’s commission on calls. The proceeds are used to buy supplies like mattresses, blankets and jumpsuits for the jail, Blakely said. “It’s cheaper on the family and, with a collect call, the inmate could get refused,” the sheriff said. “And, we make a commission of about $5,000 a month on the cards.” Read More. |
