Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that, in high quantities, is toxic to humans and animals and can be lethal. It is the most common type of fatal air poisoning in many countries. Paramedics from Southwest Ambulance transported four inmates and a guard from the Graham County Jail to the Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center on Wednesday at about 3:40 p.m. after the victims apparently suffered carbon monoxide poisoning. According to a preliminary report from Graham County Undersheriff Jeff McCormies, inmates at the jail were operating a pressure washer in B Hall that caused carbon monoxide to build up. The pressure washer is powered by a gas Honda motor. A follow-up press release from the Sheriff's Office stated the washer had been used for the last several days with no reported problems. On Jan. 26, however, inmates and employees in the cellblock began to experience dizziness and weakness after the washer was in operation for about 1.5 hours. The inmates and employees started showing signs of distress at about 3 p.m., according to McCormies. Inmate Raymond Uribe is wheeled out of the Graham County Jail by paramedics.
