BUNNELL -- Prisoners from the Tomoka Correctional Facility will continue working for Flagler County in a groundskeeping capacity at the parks and the airport this year. The County Commission on Monday approved the $58,000 contract with the Florida Department of Corrections even though most of the commissioners would rather see the work -- and the money -- stay within the county. Commissioner Nate McLaughlin, who cast the only dissenting vote, first made a motion to reject the contract -- with the understanding it could come before the commission again -- until a meeting could be held with Sheriff Don Fleming about using a workforce of those incarcerated at the Flagler County Inmate Facility. It failed for lack of a second. The contract approved by commissioners will pay for the salary and benefits of one guard who oversees a crew of eight, said County Administrator Craig Coffey.
