| Mayor, Citizens Take Stance Against Jail |

The nearly 400 Palm Springs residents and business owners who attended Mayor Steve Pougnet's State of the City speech Tuesday were optimistic as they left the Hilton Palm Springs Resort. Pougnet used his annual address as an opportunity to emphasize future economic growth for the city's struggling downtown. Using a PowerPoint presentation, the mayor said that opposition to a 7,200-bed jail proposed for the “entrance of the Coachella Valley” is a key to ensuring that brighter future. Riverside County Detention Center officials would like to build the jail on roughly 200 acres along Interstate 10. It would be about 12 miles away from the heart of Palm Springs. “We don't want to have to tell people to take a right from the jail to get into Palm Springs,” Pougnet said. Read More. |
