San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie M. Dumanis announced today that former Encinitas Mayor Daniel Dalager, 60, pleaded guilty to a violation of the Government Code 87100 relating to Conflict of Interest. He was immediately fined and sentenced. As a result of the plea, Dalager cannot hold public office for a period of four years. “Our office will continue working to hold public officials accountable for their actions when they are found in violation of conflict of interest laws,” said DA Dumanis. The February 17, 2010 violation was based on Dalager’s vote on an appeal to void a city violation filed against Mathew Gordon’s residential property. The appeal was being heard by the Encinitas City Council while Dalager was mayor. An investigation revealed that Dalager had received discounted appliances for his home from Gordon, the owner of Aztec Appliances, in the months prior to the vote. Dalager did not recuse himself. A few months before the council vote, Dalager received a cooktop, oven and exhaust fan from Gordon. Dalager subsequently gave Gordon $150. The same appliances would retail new in excess of $2,000. Dalager pleaded guilty in front of Superior Court Judge Hockett in Vista, who sentenced Dalager to three years probation and a $1,000 fine. |
