Drug Gang Shoots Up Guards in Jailbreak |

Two prisoners died, but four managed to flee a Rio de Janeiro prison last week when 50 members of a local drug gang sprayed guard towers with gun fire to cover the escape, police said. The gangsters shot up the Frei Caneca prison, with some throwing ropes over the wall while others used assault rifles to keep the guards at bay in an audacious show of violence in the crime-ridden city. Guards killed two inmates as they were climbing the wall, but four were at large after heading into the Zinco slum next to the prison. A woman was wounded by a stray bullet. Acting state security secretary Marcelo Itagiba said the prison complex that houses 3,000 inmates would be closed and prisoners transferred to other jails. The attack came as authorities face a new wave of attacks against police across Rio in which 10 officers have died over the past 15 days. Heavily armed drug gangs control many of the city's slums, making Rio one of the world's most violent cities. |
