| Montana Considers Job Of Sheriffs |

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Legislators are considering two bills that would increase the administrative power of sheriffs across the state. Senate Bills 17 and 18 sponsored by Republican Sen. Jim Shockley of Victor would increase the control a sheriff has over detention facilities and give the sheriff the sole authority to hire and fire detention staff. Shockley says he sponsored the bills because of the handling of the firing of jailer who allegedly abused an inmate. Supporters say sheriffs are losing control of their jails and are at the mercy of liability concerns. Read More. |
