Two different versions of a prison event, one from the corrections officers, and one from the inmate defendant, didn’t apparently trouble Gratiot County jurors. They returned a guilty verdict in just 35 minutes. Jose Antonio Perez, an inmate then at the Level 1 Mid Michigan Correctional Facility in September was tried and convicted Wednesday of possessing a sharpened piece of steel, Gratiot County Prosecutor Keith Kushion said. “This was a particularly lethal weapon,” he said. “It was 7 and three/fourths inches long.” A corrections officer testified that he had seen another inmate pass something to Perez and then called Perez into the office to check him for contraband.
