| Cuts Could Affect Probation In SD |

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — For many people on probation in South Dakota, court-ordered counseling services represent one of the last stops before jail. Cuts to the state's courts budget could take that stop away for some. Officials have proposed slashing the funding in half for probation counseling, as part of system-wide cuts in this year's budget. Some people who aren't already insured or can't pay for the services, which include substance-abuse counseling and skills development, could lose them. "It's intuitive that we won't be able to provide the same level of service," said Terry Dosch, the executive director of the South Dakota Council of Mental Health Centers.
