An inmate was charged with murder last Tuesday in the beating death of his cellmate at the Charleston, S.C. County Detention Center.
Robert Lee Hall, 29, of Charleston, was found dead in his cell late Sunday night. A State Law Enforcement Division arrest warrant says Raymond Donald Stegall II was charged with murder.
Hall and Stegall were locked in a cell together in the jail's disciplinary unit when Hall was killed about 11:30 p.m. last Sunday, according to the affidavit.
Chief Deputy Coroner Rae Wooten said Hall died from "blunt force head trauma."
Stegall, 26, has a long criminal record that includes possession of crack, armed robbery and assault and battery with intent to kill, according to SLED.
Hall was awaiting trial for the July 2002 shooting death of 25-year-old Shane Xavier White.
Capt. Dana Valentine said the two inmates, who were housed in a cell designed for one person, got into an argument that led to a fight.
Stegall "did admit to striking Hall in the head with a closed fist," the affidavit said.
Valentine would not comment on whether overcrowding at the jail contributed to the fight, citing the ongoing investigation. The county jail was designed to hold 600 inmates but currently houses more than 1,300.
