SC Immigration Laws Could Be Costly |

As South Carolina lawmakers debate a proposed Arizona-style anti-illegal immigration bill this week, critics of the legislation are questioning how much such legislation could end up costing taxpayers as the state faces a nearly $1 billion budget shortfall. A recent Pew Research Center report showed a major decline in the number of illegal immigrants in the state, and South Carolina already has a law requiring employers to verify the immigration status of employees. But the Arizona-style bill is nonetheless a priority for lawmakers this session — and has prompted opposition on many grounds. The bill would give local law enforcement federal authority to enforce immigration law. Critics argue such a law would lead to racial profiling of Hispanics and other minorities.
