County Asking For Financial Help For Jail |

Yakima County commissioners plan to ask for at least $2.9 million for the county's Union Gap jail building on South 18th Street across from the Valley Mall. The county will accept sealed bids until March 22, part of a long-term strategy to resuscitate the county Department of Corrections budget. Commissioners set the amount and bid date following a public hearing Tuesday on the plan to sell the 27,758-square-foot building. No one testified during the hearing at Yakima City Hall. The budget took a $9.3 million hit when King County cities withdrew most of the inmates who had been housed locally under a seven-year contract that expired Dec. 31. Read More. |
