Stephen Lawson used to drive down the street and look for ways to break into the buildings he saw. That changed after he went through a career training program in prison about 14 years ago. Oklahoma CareerTech Skills Centers provide life skills and job... Now when he drives down the street, he notices the structure and architecture of the buildings he passes. “I’ve got a blue print head now instead of a criminal mind,” said Lawson, 40, of Edmond. Lawson is among thousands of ex-offenders who have gone through training programs at Oklahoma CareerTech Skills Centers. Skills Centers provide a variety of vocational and life skills training to adult and juvenile offenders. The training program started in 1971 inside the Jim E. Hamilton Correctional Center, then known as the Ouachita Correctional Center, in Hodgen.
