Freed N.J. inmate attacks parents

Just hours after being released from prison, a 35-year-old New Jersey man went to his parents' home in a quiet neighborhood last week, brutally slashed his father's throat and partially severed one of his mother's fingers, according to police.
The father, Edward Berbon Sr., 66, survived the attack but was in extremely critical condition, suffering from multiple stab wounds at a Trenton N.J. trauma hospital.
Meanwhile, his oldest son, Edward Berbon Jr., was being held in a Mercer County Correction Center jail cell in lieu of $500,000 cash bail, police said.
Arrested a half-hour after he allegedly fled the crime scene on Cannon Drive, he was charged with attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault, robbery, domestic violence and two weapons possession offenses, police said.
Diane Berbon, who turned 59 on Saturday, was released yesterday afternoon from Capital Health System at Fuld - the same city hospital caring for her husband - after surgery attempting to reattach her partially amputated finger, police said.
While police confirmed they are investigating if money or drugs played a role, the motive for the attack remained a mystery yesterday.
