County No Longer Housing Immigration Inmates |

KERSFIELD, Calif.—Kern County is losing a lucrative contract with the federal government to house detained illegal immigrants. The Bakersfield Californian reports that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will be terminating its contract to house detainees at Lerdo Jail, costing the Kern County Sheriff's Department about $2.5 million a year. Officials say the jail houses an average of 112 ICE detainees per day. The detainees are in deportation proceedings or awaiting removal from the United States. ICE officials, who notified the county about the termination on February 4, did not give a reason for withdrawing the contract. The termination is effective in 90 days. Read More. |
