Dora B. Schriro, Commissioner of New York City’s Department of Correction, has been honored with the 2011 American Justice Award presented by the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center. Commissioner Schriro will be presented the award at the February 22 ceremony in Miami “for her courage and commitment to tolerance, fairness and justice for all.” The Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center, a non-for-profit that protects and promotes human rights for immigrants in the United States, cited Commissioner Schriro’s work as Special Advisor to the Secretary (Janet Napolitano) and director of the Office of Detention Policy and Planning for the US Department of Homeland Security, where she developed the Department’s plan for overhaul of the nation’s immigrant detention system, and for her work while heading prison and jail systems. Commissioner Schriro is the only woman to have led two state prison systems—Missouri and Arizona— and the jail systems of two major cities—New York and St. Louis.
