NJ DOC Officer Makes Heroic Rescue

PATERSON, NJ - Passaic County Corrections officers were in the right place at the right time when a fire started at 324 Grand Street, across the street from the county jail, early on the morning of February 18.

Corrections Officer Jason Ekkers, a 6 year veteran, was on routine patrol outside the jail he spotted heavy smoke emanating from that building and the one next to it, according to a press release issue by the sheriff's department.

Ekkers rushed towards the smoke and was met by a hysterical woman who stated that her baby and family were still in the burning building, thepress release said. Ekkers called the fire into dispatch requesting Paterson Fire and additional police and then ran into the building.
