MS Inmate Recaptured After Escape |

PASCAGOULA -- A state inmate who beat a guard at the Pascagoula Restitution Center was taken into custody Friday in Lucedale, according to the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Officials said a search started just after midnight Thursday for Eric Daniel Coggins, 27, shortly after he struck a corrections officer in the face and head with a cell-phone charger and fled the building. MDOC investigators along with agents with the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force took him into custody just after noon Friday in Lucedale. Coggins had served a year at the state penitentiary at Parchman for a vehicle-burglary conviction in Forrest County and was under MDOC supervision at the Pascagoula site at the time of the escape because he was still paying off court costs and fines related to his conviction.
