Jail Budget Cuts Won't Create Safety Issues

PIERRE -- A proposed $8.3 million budget cut will not cause safety problems in South Dakota's prison system, state corrections Secretary Tim Reisch said Wednesday.

As part of his plan to cut state general fund spending by 10 percent to fix a $127 million budget gap, Gov. Dennis Daugaard has recommended that overall spending from state, federal and other funds be set at $98.6 million for adult and juvenile corrections programs for the year beginning July 1. The prison system will cut the equivalent of nearly 40 full-time jobs.

"We are comfortable with these cuts," Reisch told the Legislature's Joint Appropriations Committee, which will put together a state budget next month.

Reisch said spending from state general funds will increase by a little more than $2 million next year, but he said that's because state money must be used to replace nearly $8 million in federal stimulus money that was available to cover some costs.
