The killing of a security officer in 1999 at the Louisiana State Penitentiary stemmed from an attempt by a group of inmates to get enough officer uniforms to slip out of the prison, according to documents turned over to defense attorneys. According to a state police investigative report, Capt. David C. Knapps short-circuited the escape by putting up a fight before he was beaten and stabbed to death on Dec. 28, 1999. Four of the inmates told investigators that they wanted to take enough guards hostage to provide a uniform for each prisoner, then escape from the prison's Camp D using a car and a back road into the Tunica Hills, according to the report. Two other guards were taken hostage, but were not harmed. Inmates Jeffrey Cameron Clark, 44; David Mathis, 27; Barry S. Edge, 44; David Brown, 31; and Robert G. Carley, 36, face first-degree murder charges in Knapps' slaying. A sixth inmate was shot to death by security officers. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against the five inmates. The next hearing in the case is set for Aug. 27 in state district court. |
