BROOKSVILLE - County commissioners took the first step Tuesday toward building a standalone medical facility on the grounds of the Hernando County Jail. Board members voted 5-0 to obtain cost estimates from architectural firms to design the standalone building. The cost should be $1.2 to $1.5 million and would come out of the $3 million the county set aside in a jail improvement fund, said Lisa Hammond, consultant to the Clerk of the Circuit Court. Inmates who need treatment would be moved out of the jail and the current medical unit would be redesigned for juvenile housing.
