County Jail Perfects Frugal Spending

Walton County’s Department of Corrections is looking to cash in on its captive audience as one of its many ways to offset budget shortfalls.

Inmate visitation from the 584-bed facility is administered via closed-circuit teleconferencing. There are 28 stations for visitors and 16 monitors located in each of the inmates’ housing pods. So why not show commercials to family members and inmates waiting to connect?

“We can upload a .jpg file and scroll as regular and as often as we want,” said Director Maj. Stan Sunday of the Charlotte County, Florida, initiative he is championing. “It has generated significant revenue for them; right now the staff attorney is reviewing it.”

“Then we need to determine what we want to charge.”

With the target market being inmates and those visiting them, potential buyers for the advertisements are bail bonding companies, attorneys and towing companies.
