| Potential Prison Closure Upsets Locals |

They came with only an hour and a half notice, but they came with a purpose — to present their case before the public via the news media. About 50 people met at the Bent County Courthouse Monday to plead their case to keep the Fort Lyon prison open. Governor John Hickenlooper has proposed to close the Department of Corrections facility as part of the state’s overall budget reductions. Television cameras were lined up at the courthouse and people from throughout the Lower Arkansas Valley gathered to make their voices heard. Bill Long, Bent County Commissioner, said he isn’t choosing a side, he can only side for the community. Long has lived in Las Animas all of his life and said this will “affect families directly involved, but will also affect businesses. This will result in the domino effect and reach all levels of our community.” He is concerned for the unemployment rate increasing in an area where there is a enormous lack of jobs at the present. He also said the poverty level is over 29 perent while the state average is 11.2 percent and this will only raise Bent’s poverty level. Read More. |
