| County Jails Could Handle Longer Sentences |

Sheriffs told lawmakers Monday that they don't want county jails filled with inmates sentenced to as much as two years instead of the one-year maximum allowed now. "It seems this has a huge potential domino effect on local communities," said Washington County's Rob Gordon, who spoke for the Oregon State Sheriffs Association and is an experienced jail manager. "My plea is to examine these dominoes, take some time and talk to your local elected officials. I think this is not a good idea. I would discourage sending anybody to the community for that length of time." He told members of the Senate Judiciary Committee that an analysis of Washington County's inmates showed that the plan could increase the numbers in county jails by more than 40 percent. Read More. |
