An American Fork, Utah man has been sentenced to up to five years in prison for a cattle-raising investment swindle. Craig Lee Mecham, 49, was accused of telling investors in Utah, Salt Lake and Sanpete counties last year that he would use the money to raise cattle for slaughter. Prosecutors said he never bought any cattle and instead just spent the money. After his arrest last year, Mecham was returned to prison for an alleged parole violation in another case. His attorney said the parole violation later was discounted, but Mecham has been kept at the prison pending the outcome of this case. He was sentenced Tuesday by 4th District Court Judge Steven Hansen, who gave him credit for 15 months served and ordered him to pay $8,994 restitution. Mecham pleaded guilty on April 28 to four charges of theft by deception. As part of a plea bargain, other charges were dropped. Records indicate Mecham has been arrested 10 times in Utah County since 1979. |
