Early Release Programs Could Be Cut |

A program allowing some nonviolent offenders to petition for early release from prison, which some Republican critics had derided as "catch and release," would be ended under the budget Gov. Scott Walker introduced Tuesday. The program, implemented by former Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle, was designed to result in up to 3,000 inmates getting out early — mostly those with significant health problems and inmates close to completing their sentences. But just 391 inmates were released under the program from Oct. 1, 2009 to Jan. 1, 2011, a spokesman for the state Department of Corrections said. Read More. |
