OK Parole Board In Denial Mode |

TAHLEQUAH — Parole was denied last week for two area men serving life sentences on first-degree murder convictions. The Pardon and Parole Board denied releases for Christopher E. Koch and Melvin J. Battiest. Koch was convicted in a 1981 Cherokee County homicide, and Battiest’s sentence was for a 1984 Wagoner County slaying. Both were previously considered for parole and denied. Koch was convicted of fatally shooting Guy Pierce Baber in October 1981 near the Illinois River. Records show the shooting actually occurred in April that year. Koch was 17 at the time. Battiest, who is also serving a life term, was convicted with Billy Ray Battenfield for the fatal beating of Donald Cantrell in 1984. Authorities said Cantrell was clubbed to death near Fort Gibson Lake, and his money was taken April 22, 1984. Read More. |
