| GA Transitional Center Suffers Two Escapes |

Augusta, GA -- Within the past week, two inmates have escaped from the Augusta Transitional Center. It's a minimum security jail in downtown where convicted felons go towards the end of their sentence. They are are allowed to leave the center for work. With barbed wire, high fences and security cameras it doesn't look inviting, but if you're an inmate, the Augusta transitional center is where you want to be. Felons come here when they are toward the end of their sentence. That's why it's hard to understand why two inmates in the past week would choose to escape. Richmond county authorities say Danny Shelton Godwin only had around 6 months left on his sentence when he walked to a store and didn't come back. The other inmate, Spencer Darnell Cotton was supposed to go to his job, but never showed up. Just a block away from the transitional center are houses and businesses. The people here say they've never had a problem with the center, they've even hired inmates to do work, but that doesn't mean they want them roaming the streets either. Read More. |
