WA Guards Demand Safer Environment

MONROE, Wash. -- Protests are popping up outside 11 prisons across Washington Wednesday demanding better equipment and procedures to help make sure after a day of work, they can go home in one piece

The correctional officers on the picket line feel, in a way, like they're fighting for their lives.

"This is... a dangerous job, but it doesn't have to be as dangerous as the administration is making it for us," said Correctional Officer Carl Beatty.

The murder of fellow officer Jayme Biendl in January is now an inspiration behind the push for safer work conditions.
