DOVER — The closing of Southern Oaks Girls School in July as part of the governor’s proposed 2011-13 budget was recommended by the Department of Corrections based on a consolidation study. Consolidating the state’s three juvenile corrections institutions — Southern Oaks in Dover, Ethan Allen School in Wales and Lincoln Hills School in Irma — would save $23.4 million in 2012 in operating costs, the DOC says. As of July 1, juveniles at both Southern Oaks and Ethan Allen would be transferred to Lincoln Hills, which is located on an 800-acre site. All male juveniles would be housed at the existing Lincoln Hills facility and a separate facility there would house female juveniles. The consolidation is the result of a vote by the state juvenile corrections task force last year and was recommended by DOC Secretary Gary Hamblin to Gov. Scott Walker, according to a press release from the DOC. Read More. |
