A Minnesota women's prison chaplain who was fired after she criticized a controversial Christian program for inmates will receive a settlement from the state. In a politically charged case that touched on the role of state-approved evangelism, Kristine Holmgren sued the Department of Corrections after she was fired in 2006 as the chaplain for the women's prison in Shakopee. On Monday, attorneys for the state agreed to pay her $227,500 in exchange for her dropping all future claims, Holmgren and her attorney said. But that hasn't quieted Holmgren's criticism of the program, which is scheduled for a review by state officials this year.
