The Okaloosa Correctional Institution in Crestview hosted its first Re-entry Gavel Club Invitational Humorous Speech Contest on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the OCI Main Unit Chapel.

Four community Toastmasters pitted their oratory skills against inmate Toastmasters.

The Florida Department of Corrections’ mission includes the successful re-entry of prison inmates back into society, further ensuring public safety by producing law-abiding, tax-paying citizens. Okaloosa Correctional Institution has embraced this initiative by providing numerous programs to its inmates through partnerships with community agencies and local churches.

The Okaloosa Correctional Institution Gavel Club is affiliated with Toastmaster International, an organization dedicated to developing its members’ skills in speaking, listening, thinking and leadership. Participants practice and learn skills by filling a meeting role, which can range from giving a prepared or impromptu speech to serving as timer, evaluator or grammarian.
