Escape Sheds Light On Juvenile Center |

PRATTVILLE -- The recent escape from the Frank Lee Youth Center in Deatsville of an inmate who was later charged with robbing a 76-year-old Autauga County woman has thrust the minimum security facility in the spotlight. The facility doesn't have a fence, and it's not even a youth center any more. It became a work release center in November 2007, said Grant Culliver, institutional coordinator for the northern region for the Alabama Department of Corrections. It was built in 1975 to house youthful, non-violent offenders. The changeover was made to give the department more capacity in its work release programs, Culliver added. On Feb. 23, Steven Allen Moore of Decatur escaped from Frank Lee. The 25-year-old was convicted in 2005 of burglary and distribution of a controlled substance, DOC records show. He now faces additional charges of burglary and robbery for allegedly breaking into the home of the elderly resident and tying her up with duct tape before making off with her vehicle, cellular phone and several credit cards, said Chief Deputy Joe Sedinger of the Autauga County Sheriff's Office.
