Two charged with helping inmates escape

Police arrested two people Tuesday on charges they helped two inmates escape from a maximum security state prison in Marlboro County (S.C.) early Sunday morning.

Arrest warrants say Christopher Rodabaugh, 18, cut an outer fence, and Wendy Crume, 27, helped plan the breakout at Evans Correctional Institution on the outskirts of Bennettsville. Both Rodabaugh and Crume are from Myrtle Beach.

The inmates, still on the lam, had scaled the inner, razor wire-topped fence and climbed through an outer fence investigators think was cut before the escape began.

As the inmates scaled the inner fence, an alarm sounded, but the prisoners were outside the second fence by the time officers responded.

Rodabaugh was arrested after SLED agents discovered the pair bought fence-cutting tools from a Wal-Mart in Conway, the warrants said.

Crume was arrested in a store at Fairview Heights, Ill., just outside of St. Louis, said SLED Chief Robert Stewart.

Police continue to search for inmates Jonathan Melton, 25, and Robert Fortener Diehl, 26. Melton was serving 18 years for burglary and other crimes in Horry and Richland counties. Diehl was serving 15 years for burglary and other charges out of Horry County.

Stewart said a manhunt was under way where Crume was arrested. Authorities were looking for a two-door, sliver 1997 Acura, with S.C. tags 618 5AW.

The men are believed to be armed, he said.

Inmates at the prison told investigators the escape had been planned for months and Crume would drive the getaway vehicle. The warrant says Crume told several family members about the escape from a prison surrounded by woods and houses.

Evans has about 1,450 inmates and 250 uniformed officers, according to agency statistics.
