Lincoln County officials say Gov. Scott Walker's proposal to add 114 jobs at Lincoln Hills School could bring millions of dollars to the local economy and promises to be a boon to businesses and schools. Walker announced Tuesday he plans to close two juvenile correction centers in southern Wisconsin -- Ethan Allen School in Wales and Southern Oaks Girls School in Union Grove -- and send 185 students from those schools to Lincoln Hills. The consolidation plan would save the department $23 million a year and help the Department of Corrections eliminate $21 million in debt for juvenile corrections by 2021. The plan also means jobs, new residents paying property taxes to central Wisconsin municipalities and new customers for businesses in the region. Margaret Carpenter, who oversees the juvenile corrections division, said 91 of the 114 jobs are teachers, counselors and social workers who make between $22 and $30 an hour. At $25 an hour, those jobs alone could bring an estimated $4.7 million in wages to Lincoln County. Read More. |
