The search continued yesterday for two inmates who escaped from the minimum security James Musick county branch jail in Irvine, Calif., including one who tricked a friend into providing him a getaway car. Mark Thomas Georgantas, 41, of Newport Beach and James William Costelow, 24, of Riverside escaped through a storm drain sometime between midnight and 5 a.m., said Jim Amormino of the Orange County, Calif., Sheriff's Department. At first the men "scaled a barbed wire fence by placing blankets over it and attempted to scale a second" one, Amormino said. But at least one of them got cut in the process, which caused the men to try the storm drain instead, Amormino said. The escapees, held on fraud and grand theft- and burglary-related charges, respectively -- shed their jail attire at Alton Parkway and Irvine Boulevard, Amormino said. Deputies and bloodhounds searched a nearby creek area, where the two men apparently split up. The men are believed to be wearing blue jeans and blue denim "jail" shirts, Amormino said. Georgantas called a female companion and "made up some story" about getting out of jail early, Amormino said. When she arrived, Georgantas threw her out of the rented silver 2001 Nissan Altima and drove off, Amormino said, adding that the woman will not face any criminal charges. Costelow is believed to have fled on foot, Amormino said. He was facing trial on allegations of possessing burglary tools. His rap sheet includes burglary and theft-type activity, Amormino said. Georgantas was jailed on conspiracy to defraud and grand theft charges. His history includes bunco-type crimes, Amormino said. |
