OK DOC Money Being Shifted |

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A plan to prevent more furloughs of Oklahoma prison workers by shifting money from a prison industries fund cleared the Oklahoma Senate on Monday, as lawmakers dismissed concerns the move could destroy a successful program for rehabilitating inmates. The Senate voted 37-7 to approve legislation that would allow the Department of Corrections to tap $5.25 million from the agency's Industries Revolving Fund, which is used to operate a program in which about 1,500 inmates run farms and make furniture and other goods. It employs about 100 prison workers. Corrections officials have said it's not clear exactly how taking money from the fund will affect the program, but prisons spokesman Jerry Massie said it will have a "major impact." Massie said the agency will consider liquidating assets, reducing the number of factories and discontinuing certain product lines. Read More. |
