A murder trial for Steven Mark Pryer is still slated for May after several pending motions were resolved Monday without creating any delays. But one issue still unresolved in the case is whether State’s Attorney Chris Reif will pursue the death penalty. The prosecutor is awaiting Gov. Pat Quinn’s decision on a bill passed in January that would abolish executions in Illinois. Quinn said Monday that he will act this week though he has not said whether or not he supports the measure. If Quinn does nothing the bill becomes law on July 1. Pryer, 48, of Springfield is accused of fatally shooting 54-year-old Diann Hoagland Aug. 18 in the front yard of her rural Alexander residence.
