Sheriff Mark Pazin, President of the California State Sheriffs Association issued the following statement: “California State Sheriffs’ Association (CSSA) is extremely concerned about the possibility of stalled budget talks. Our ability to fund important public safety programs such as Cal-MMET for methamphetamine interdiction, COPS funding for deputy sheriffs, police officers, probation officers and district attorneys is very much at risk if we do not approve the resources portion of Governor Brown’s proposed realignment budget plan in a timely manner. It is vital also that this plan comes with constitutional protections so voters and local law enforcement can deliver public safety in our local communities in 2011 and beyond. “Current funding for the Local Public Safety Account expires June 30, 2011 and without a budget agreement, local public safety will be crippled. It is critically important to public safety that both parties and the Governor continue their hard work to extend or replace the resources that fund deputy sheriffs, probation officers, police officers and district attorneys. The revised local government and corrections realignment plan, which CSSA endorsed in concept, will only exacerbate our current public safety issues locally if we do not approve current and additional resources in order to protect public safety and reduce recidivism. CSSA has been working closely with the Administration and the Legislature to avoid such a catastrophe in our communities and we urge everyone involved to keep discussing all options.” |
