BRATTLEBORO -- Struggles, heartbreak and triumph. For the eight graduates of the Community High School of Vermont's Class of 2011, those three words sum up their experiences as students in the Department of Corrections' alternative high school. "The past is not an obstacle to you," said Keith Howland, the deputy director of Youth Services for the Vermont DOC. During the ceremony on Wednesday, he lauded the graduates for their courage in returning to school to get their high school diplomas and urged them to become role models for teens that may find themselves in similar straits through which the graduates have made their way. Peter vanWageningen, an instructor in the program, located next to the DOC's Probation and Parole office on Putney Road, said he was proud of the work the eight students did to earn their diplomas.
