OK Jails Need Political Help |

JUST about every time the Legislature does something regarding the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, it drives home the need for Republican lawmakers to be willing to consider real changes in how we handle criminals. GOP leaders must be willing to consider changes in corrections policy The latest example came this week when the Senate approved a bill that allows the DOC to take as much as $5.3 million from the Oklahoma Correctional Industries operating account and use it to reduce the number of furlough days for employees. The DOC had sought $35 million in supplemental funding to get through this fiscal year, and planned to use a chunk of that to alleviate furloughs. The request was denied in this difficult budget year. Sen. David Myers, R-Ponca City, said there's enough money in the OCI account's cash flow to handle the transfer, and that this plan helps keep the number of furlough days down. The latter is true, and that's important, because the last thing the prison system needs is an even larger inmate-to-guard ratio than presently exists. Read More. |
