Bounty Hunting Nets Profit For Locals |

Local governments strapped for cash are turning to a new source of income: a bounty payment for reporting jail inmates to the Social Security Administration. Inmates who are in jail or prison longer than 30 days lose eligibility for Social Security checks. The Social Security Administration stops hundreds of millions of dollars in payments each year from going to inmates, with the help of jails and prisons that agree to provide inmates' names, birth dates and Social Security numbers. The program, which was established in 1997, is new to some local officials.
